Chiapas Amber Macrame
Necklace

This necklace is a zig-zag macramé design with dark brown linen
and honey color glass beads and it features a beautiful piece
of amber with inclusions, from Chiapas in Mexico. I got this
amber when I was there this year in May. Chiapas is such a
magical place. I got this piece from an eccentric artisan that
has been working with amber for over twenty years. He gets the
amber in big chunks and then works it into different shapes and
polishes it. He claims to have found an amber piece with a tiny
ancient mushroom inside. I couldn't believe it until he
actually showed me the pictures of it that were taken through a
special microscope. It was one of the most amazing things I
have ever seen; a tiny, fully formed mushroom perfectly
preserved inside an ancient piece of amber. He said that the
piece would undergo some scientific studies and would then be
presented at an exhibition.
Well, amber form Chiapas is considered among the
finest in the world. Amber is a precious stone of
vegetable origin. It is formed from the resin that flowed
out of some ancient trees species, which then goes
through a fossilization process through which amber
aquires its texture and different colors. Chiapas amber
comes from the Hymenaea Courbaril Leguminoseaea Tree,
commonly known as Guapinol in Mexico, and it is from 20
to 40 million years old (terciary geological
period). The great value of
amber resides not only on its beauty and antiquity; when
it is still a sticky resin, it traps many little insects,
plants and feathers that are conserved once the resin
hardens into a fossil.
Clasp the necklace by inserting the tiger eye
stones into the bead hole. The necklace can be washed
with gentle soap and a soft brush. The amber stone can be
polished by rubbing it with a soft cloth and a drop of
olive oil. Amber is a delicate stone so it must not be
exposed to extreme temperatures or any harsh
chemicals.
