Jungle
Macrame Necklace - Made at Tikal Ruins in
Guatemala

When travelling around Guatemala this year, I
visited the Tikal Maya Ruins in the jungle. It was a
magical place, the mysterious ruins are deep
inside the jungle far from any city. Every time I
looked up into the trees I would see exotic birds,
parrots, toucans and Howler monkeys, among many
other creatures we ran into. I went with my friend
Vanessa, whom I had met weeks before up at the Atitlan
lake. We were so impressed by Tikal and having such a
good time, I definitely felt at home in the jungle, I
felt strongly attracted to it and didn’t want to leave,
that we ended up staying to sleep right there. We found a
safe spot, ate some fruits, and went to sleep. We woke up
very late at night because it had started
drizzling and were very cold out there in the open, bugs
were biting us all over, and it was too dark to move (we
didn’t have a flashlight or anything because we hadn’t
come prepared for this)! I know, risky..crazy…well we
surivived and it was an amazing experience. We were woken
up by the strong howls of the howling monkey, sure
enough, the day was arriving. We saw the sun rise from
the top of one huge pyramid, it was overwhelming. We
spent the day exploring the jungle, feeling so in touch
with it. I was very impressed by this huge trees, whose
wonderful roots decorated a complete hill, making a
natural ladder around it. I started knotting right after
and this necklace is what came out. It was
created with
green leafs made of mother of pearl, small round unakite
stones, and a cool brown seed that I found in Guatemala
but I haven’t identified it yet, and the macramé design
depicts the harmonious intertwining of roots and branches
in the jungle.
To clasp the necklace insert the acai seeds
(from the Amazon) into the bead opening. The necklace can be
washed with gentle soap and a soft brush. It can be used in water
since all of its materials are water
resistant.
